AI automation agency
An AI automation agency helps businesses streamline tasks with chatbots, workflow automation and connected systems. UK provider examples range from a £500 starter bundle to £1,200–£3,000 for a focused automation; these are quoted service prices, not expected earnings (<a href="https://aiautomatecompany.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AI Automate Company</a>, <a href="https://www.visuosofts.com/ai-automation" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Visuosofts</a>).

- You help businesses save time with simple computer systems.
- First, ask what task takes too much time.
- Build and test one small solution.
- Show the business how to use it safely.
- Agree the work, price and support before you start.
Who it suits
Adults who enjoy solving practical business problems, can explain technical ideas clearly and are willing to learn tools by building and testing small projects.
Businesses may pay to reduce repetitive work, missed enquiries or time spent moving information between systems. A small, well-tested solution can be easier to understand and manage than a large, unclear project.
Step by step
- Choose a business type you understand. Pick a group such as trades businesses, local shops or small professional firms. Start where you understand the everyday work, or can learn about it by asking respectful questions. About 1-2 hours.
- Ask owners about repetitive tasks. Ask what takes time, causes missed enquiries or involves copying information between tools. Find out how the task works now before suggesting a solution. About 1-3 days.
- Choose one small problem to solve. Pick a contained task, such as sending a website enquiry into a customer relationship management system (CRM). Write down what should happen at each stage, including what a person needs to do. About 1-2 hours.
- Build a demonstration with sample information. Create a small example using invented or sample details, not a prospect’s real customer data. Keep the demonstration limited to the task you chose. About 1-2 days.
- Test normal cases and possible problems. Try ordinary enquiries and awkward cases, such as missing details, duplicates and tool errors. Make clear where a person should take over instead of trusting an uncertain AI response. About 2-4 hours.
- Write a short, clear proposal. Describe the task, what you will build, what is excluded, how you will hand it over and what support is available. Explain the limits of the system in plain language. About 2-4 hours.
- Agree the work and price in writing. Set out the scope, price, payment arrangements, exclusions and how extra changes will be agreed before work starts. UK providers publish examples from £500 for a starter bundle to £1,200–£3,000 for a focused automation; these are service prices, not guaranteed earnings (AI Automate Company, Visuosofts). About 1-3 days.
- Build and test the agreed solution. Work to the agreed scope and test the solution with the client. Keep a record of the tools, settings, decisions and any known limits. About 2-10 days.
- Show the client how to use it. Demonstrate the system, explain what it can and cannot do, and show what to do when an error occurs. Agree who will handle problems, ongoing costs and future changes. About 1-2 hours.
Your first 15 minutes
Speak with a local business owner about one repetitive task, then sketch a simple demonstration using sample data.
The money
Price for the work involved: discovery, building, testing, handover and any agreed support. Set out what is excluded and how extra changes will be priced; published UK provider prices range from £500 for a starter bundle to £1,200–£3,000 for a focused automation, but those are quoted service prices, not typical earnings (<a href="https://aiautomatecompany.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AI Automate Company</a>, <a href="https://www.visuosofts.com/ai-automation" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Visuosofts</a>).
Example only: In one week, a £500 project minus £50 of business costs leaves £450 before tax. Separately, a €500 project minus €50 of business costs leaves €450 before tax. These are simple illustrations, not expected prices or earnings.
The rules
This checklist covers selected tax, data-protection, advertising and business-name points for your AI automation agency. It does not cover every rule that may apply. Check with the relevant authority about your circumstances and the data you handle.
UK and Northern Ireland
- Trading income and tax. The first £1,000 a year of trading income is covered by the trading allowance. Above that, tell HMRC. The £1,000 is gross income before expenses. If you need to register for Self Assessment, do so by 5 October after the relevant tax year ends (GOV.UK, Tax Help for Hustles, GOV.UK).
- VAT. You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000. If you're unsure how the threshold applies to your business, check with HMRC (Business.gov.uk).
- Data protection fee. Use the ICO self-assessment tool to check whether your organisation must pay a data protection fee. There isn't one rule for every sole trader. Examples of activities that need a fee include marketing another person’s business, goods or services, and providing consultancy or advisory services to individuals and partnerships. Holding customer details only for your own accounts and transaction records is likely to be exempt. If separate companies are data controllers, each may need to pay unless an exemption applies (ICO, ICO).
- Advertising. Clearly label advertising and affiliate posts. For example, use “Ad” (ASA).
- Terms and insurance. As a practical safeguard, agree written terms covering the work, price, what is included or excluded, how you will handle changes, cancellation and complaints. Consider suitable business and professional insurance. No specific insurance requirement is confirmed here.
Ireland
- Income tax and returns. If you work in PAYE, you must use self-assessment if your taxable non-PAYE income is over €5,000 or your gross non-PAYE income is over €30,000. Below that, declare it through Form 12 on myAccount. Check your situation with Revenue or a tax adviser (Revenue).
- VAT. The VAT registration threshold for services is €42,500. If you're unsure how your taxable turnover is counted, check with Revenue (Revenue).
- Business name. If you trade under a name other than your own, register your business name with the Companies Registration Office (CRO). Online registration costs €20 (CRO).
- Advertising. If you publish influencer or other commercial content covered by the guidance, label it clearly, for example with “#Ad”. If you're in doubt, label it (CCPC).
- Terms and insurance. As a practical safeguard, agree written terms covering the work, price, what is included or excluded, how you will handle changes, cancellation and complaints. Consider suitable business and professional insurance. No specific insurance requirement is confirmed here.
- Data protection. If you handle personal data for a client, clarify each party’s role. Check your obligations with the Data Protection Commission. I can't confirm a general fee or registration rule for every automation agency.

Common mistakes
- Suggesting an automation before understanding how the business handles the task now.
- Testing with real customer information when sample information would do.
- Leaving out awkward cases such as missing details, duplicate enquiries or service errors.
- Agreeing vague work without written limits, handover details or a process for extra changes.
- Failing to explain AI limits, ongoing costs and who handles problems after handover.
AI-made demonstration: this module has a 20-second street-chat video in the interactive guide. The presenter and the people in it are computer-generated, not real people.
