LEGO reselling
LEGO reselling means finding sets or parts at a price that leaves room for a resale profit, then checking, listing and posting them. Some UK sources describe margins on discounted or retired sets, but these are not guaranteed and there is no reliable estimate of earnings or time to a first sale.

- You buy LEGO sets or pieces and try to sell them for more.
- Check the price, pieces, condition, postage and selling fees first.
- You may need to wait a long time for a buyer.
- Start small, keep records and do not spend money you need.
- Tax and buyer rules depend on where and how you sell.
Who it suits
Best treated as an adult-run hobby or side project for people who enjoy researching set numbers, checking completeness and storing stock. The sources do not state platform age limits or give Ireland-specific selling guidance.
People look for particular sets, pieces and minifigures, including retired sets they can no longer buy in shops. Buyers may pay for a complete set in good condition, but demand and resale prices can change.
Step by step
- Set a small stock budget. Choose an amount you can afford to leave tied up if items do not sell. The sources give no UK or Ireland startup-cost figure, so decide your own limit before buying. About 15-30 minutes.
- Look for sets with resale potential. Check retired sets from Star Wars, Harry Potter and Creator Expert, or current sets with discounts, codes or cashback. Treat future retirement and demand as uncertain, not as a promise of profit. ResellRadar About 30-60 minutes.
- Search local sources for LEGO stock. Check car boot sales, charity shops and Facebook Marketplace bundles. Bulk bags may be worth considering if you are willing to sort pieces and identify sets. FlipperHelper About 1-2 hours.
- Compare sold prices before buying. Search eBay sold listings and compare them with BrickLink’s price guide. Treat completed sales as evidence of what buyers paid; an asking price alone does not show what an item will sell for. FlipperHelper About 20-40 minutes.
- Check the set and its pieces. Confirm the set number, condition and completeness. Compare pieces with the box information or instructions where available, and check that minifigures are present because missing figures can reduce appeal. FlipperHelper About 30-90 minutes.
- Work out costs before you commit. Subtract your buy price, postage, packaging and platform fees from a realistic likely selling price. Check the actual shipping cost for the item’s size and weight before listing. ResellRadar FlipperHelper About 10-20 minutes per item.
- Photograph and describe the set clearly. Take clear photos and describe the condition honestly. Include the set number in an eBay title so people searching for that set can find it. FlipperHelper About 20-40 minutes.
- Choose a suitable place to sell. Consider eBay for buyers searching for specific sets. For large sets that are awkward or costly to ship, consider local Facebook Marketplace sales. ResellRadar FlipperHelper About 15-30 minutes.
- Record results before buying more. Write down what you paid, what you sold and related costs. Review actual results before increasing stock; the cited retired-set margin estimate assumes holding sets for 1-3 years after retirement, not a quick return. ResellRadar About 15 minutes each week.
Your first 15 minutes
Choose one set or bundle you already own or can inspect locally, check its completeness and recent sold prices, then calculate a realistic listing price after costs before deciding whether to sell it.
The money
Compare recent sold listings for the same set and condition, then subtract what you paid, packaging, postage and platform fees. Check actual postage and current platform charges before listing; an asking price or a suggested margin is not a guaranteed sale price.
Example only: These are made-up figures to show the calculation, not typical earnings or actual platform fees. One week in the UK: £100 sale income - £60 stock cost - £10 fees - £8 postage and packaging = £22 before tax and your time. One week in Ireland: €100 sale income - €60 stock cost - €10 fees - €8 postage and packaging = €22 before tax and your time.
The rules
There’s no specific LEGO licence for ordinary resale. If you sell as a business, tax, consumer and platform rules may apply. Check the rules for where you live and how you sell.
UK and Northern Ireland
- Trading income and Self Assessment. The first £1,000 a year of trading income is covered by the trading allowance. This is £1,000 of gross income before expenses. If your trading income is over £1,000, tell HMRC. If you need to register for Self Assessment, the deadline is 5 October after the tax year ends. GOV.UK Tax Help for Hustles GOV.UK
- Platform reporting and VAT. Since 1 January 2024, platforms report sellers with 30 or more items or about £1,700 a year to HMRC. This reporting threshold does not, by itself, mean you owe tax. Selling your own unwanted items is not taxed under this rule. You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover is over £90,000. GOV.UK Business.gov.uk
- Online consumer rights. If you sell goods online as a business to consumers, the normal cancellation period ends 14 days after the buyer receives the goods. Exceptions apply. Before the contract, give the required information and, where cancellation rights apply, make the cancellation form available. Make costs clear. Tell buyers before purchase if they must pay return costs. Make sure buyers actively choose any extra payments. After cancelling, buyers should send returned goods within 14 days. Refund them within 14 days of receiving the goods or proof of return. The refund includes standard outbound delivery, but not the extra cost of a more expensive delivery option. Check the full requirements and exceptions before you trade as a business. legislation.gov.uk GOV.UK guidance
- Advertising and buyer information. If you publish commercial or affiliate posts, label them clearly, for example “Ad”. If you handle buyers’ details, use the ICO self-assessment tool to check whether you need to pay a data-protection fee. If you only keep customer details for your own accounts and transaction records, you’re likely to be exempt. ASA ICO
- Age, insurance and local checks. Check the platform’s terms for its age limits. You may wish to consider suitable insurance. If your selling setup changes beyond ordinary online or local resale, check with your local council or relevant body. In Northern Ireland, there’s no different LEGO resale licence identified.

- Income tax and returns. If you’re a PAYE worker, register for self-assessment using Form 11 if your taxable non-PAYE income is over €5,000 or your gross non-PAYE income is over €30,000. Below that, declare it on Form 12 through myAccount. If you’re self-employed, you pay income tax, PRSI (Class S) and USC under self-assessment. Preliminary tax is due by 31 October. The 2025 Form 11 Pay and File deadline is 31 October 2026, with a ROS extension to 18 November 2026. Check your position with Revenue or a tax adviser. Revenue Citizens Information Revenue
- VAT and platform reporting. The VAT registration threshold for goods is €85,000. Under DAC7, goods sellers are excluded from platform reporting only if they have fewer than 30 transactions and under €2,000. Platform reporting is not the same as a tax bill. Revenue Revenue
- Online consumer rights. Consumer rights apply when you buy from a business, not from a private individual. If you sell goods online as a business, buyers generally have 14 days from receiving the goods to tell you they want to cancel. They then have another 14 days to return the goods. Before purchase, give buyers information including your name and contact details, product details, total price and extra charges, cancellation rights, and contract length and deposit conditions. Make clear when payment is due. Make sure buyers actively choose any extras. Send an order confirmation in a durable format, such as email. Explain how to cancel and provide a cancellation form. After the buyer gives notice of cancellation, refund them within 14 days, subject to receiving returned items. Use the same payment method unless the consumer agrees otherwise. Consumers pay applicable return costs. Exceptions apply, so check the full rules before you trade as a business. CCPC CCPC
- Business name. If you trade under a name other than your own, register the business name with the CRO. Online registration costs €20. CRO
- Advertising and buyer information. Label commercial influencer content with “#Ad”. If in doubt, label it. CCPC
- Age, insurance and local checks. Check the platform’s terms for its age limits. You may wish to consider suitable insurance. If your selling setup changes beyond ordinary resale, check with the relevant local authority or a business adviser. There’s no specific LEGO resale licence identified.
